10 Things to Know About Kingston NY Photographer Kate Sears

By inside + out | January 22, 2023

We had the pleasure of interviewing photographer Kate Sears, an exceptional image-maker that proudly calls Upstate NY home. Click HERE to see a beautiful portfolio of her work. Of course, we love sharing these insider tips on the best places, vistas and things to do in the Hudson Valley!

What is your favorite Restaurant?
We’re quite keen on Ollie’s these days. Our daughter can run around and meet other kids. And the pizza (and drinks) are great.

Go-to Coffee Shop?
My husband makes me tea every morning. If caffeine is needed in the afternoon I usually walk to Village Grocery which is not too far from the Fuller Building.

Fav Local view?
There is a view that strikes me every day on my drive home… when you’re heading south along Hurley Mountain Road. The giant twin trees in the middle of vast farmland, are perfectly framed by an arch of trees along the roadway. It’s always so striking but all too brief.

Local store that you most frequent?
I love going to River Mint Finery’s trunk shows on a Saturday morning.

Fav “me time”?
Reading in bed for hours on a Sunday. This doesn’t happen often.

What are you reading?
An article in the New Yorker about the new VW I.D. Buzz- We had a bright teal VW Westfalia when I was in high school. I think it was one of the last models they made. It had a pop-up roof with a bed in it, a little fridge and a fold-out dining table. I long for the opportunity to pack my family up (my husband, our 5-year-old daughter and two dogs), and head out on a tour of the National Parks. The new model looks pretty cartoonish but I bet it will grow on me.

What are you watching?
The Bear on Hulu. I highly recommend it.

Listening to?
On Being with Krista Tippett is a great podcast. Her interview with Ocean Vuong is beautiful.

Favorite Artists?
It’s hard to narrow down, but I can tell you the show that I’m most eager to see is Amy Yoes’ Hot Corners at Mass MoCA.

If you could be granted one superpower, what would it be?
The ability to communicate with any living creature. But it’s a power that I can turn on and off.
